1.
I been huntin' rain, she said. I got cuts and a broken eye socket. I got a smile no one deserves. I got stains on the inside (like roadside berries been crushed). Men, you should have been better.
2.
The first time she leaves you, don’t worry. She just wants to see if you care. Wait a good week, and then wade in the creek, and shout her name in the air: Oh, Sugar. The next time she leaves you, it’s harder. She means what she says in her eyes. But it’s not to late to learn it’s good works not faith that raise you up on high. The third time is trouble.
3.
At eight, the muscles finally give way. Drink twelve, I’m at the mouth of the cave. Come with me, we’ll see just what has been hollowed out of us. We’ll give up words, make our noise unto the dirt, release our gasps unto the vaulted stone. And all the bears that love to scrape your heart will be gone by then. And all the bears that love to scrape your heart will be dead by then. Sugar, I’m not in the hospital, I’m in the cave. It was just too bright there, and everyone was just too nice to me. And I would rather your drawings of horses be charcoaled on the wall of me. And I would rather my red palm prints be way up on the wall of you. We’ll scent your skin with mandarin. We’ll braid your hair. So when morning light calls you back to him, he won’t be able to tell that you slept there. And all the bears that love to scrape your heart are dead by now. And all their skulls are calcified and beautiful. And I will love you in this privacy. I will love you from this privacy.
4.
All my stupid chairs are broken. Because I got them off the curb. Years ago and late into the night. Waiting for you to come home. The body itself must be changed if the mind is to move beyond anxiety. So here we go, babe, late into the night with yoga and booze. You’re going to need a brother who loves you, doesn’t hit you, doesn’t touch your girl. You’re going to need a brother who doesn’t mind when you’re happy or far away from his kids. All my stupid chairs are broken and I’m still waiting for you to come home.
5.
I made such good friends with the soreness in my neck. I made such good friends with the cuts in my dumb mouth. I made such good friends with not talking for days. I made such good friends with Buffalo manhattans. It’s so hard to leave them for you. I made such good friends with the lump in my throat. I made such good friends with the empty desk in my head. I made such good friends with the blood on my left hand. I made such good friends with nowhere to go that it’s difficult to say goodbye to them. But I want to say hello to you.

about

“'Gainst the odds, Quietus Volume Two is farther out than the first, and prettier. G. Bankowski has added a female choir to the mix that reminds me (slightly) of the ladies of No Other. The arrangements push song structure to a limit I didn't know existed, yet the whole thing swings, stately and poised. The tonal palette encompasses post-punk, early-nineties "post-rock" (scare-quotes mandatory), and country-rock (but the country aspect is always implied and never spelled out in the chord changes or instrumentation (i.e., no fiddle or pedal steel)), and (vaguely) soul and gospel. Bright and lucid where you'd expect a thing such as this to be sleepy and stoned; it is nonetheless perfect if you are sleepy and stoned. No one else is making music like this. There is honest-to-god mystery in it and that's awfully rare these days.”
